Around 285 million visually impaired individuals live around the world. Access to books and information, which is readily available to sighted individuals, is limited for visually impaired individuals.
Braille's complexity and high production costs (5x print books) lead to a scarcity of braille and tactile materials.
To overcome the limitations of existing translation software in handling language nuances and diverse fields, DOT partnered with Serviceplan, a global agency.Their research explored AI machine learning and grammar-based translation to achieve optimal results.Recognizing the lack of research in accurate English-to-Braille translation, DOT developed a trainable algorithm. By inputting 600,000 verified sentences, they refined the algorithm's output against existing rule-based open-source tools.
With this foundation, they designed a neural network architecture featuring an RNN tailored to Braille's complex rules.This allowed the system to learn the rules independently and ultimately led to a custom-built web interface with Braille translation capabilities.
